What about our choice?

You may have seen claims online about “losing choice.” But under the previous system, residents faced a different kind of frustration: unclear pricing, uneven service and no single point of accountability. The current approach replaces that confusion with one provider who’s accountable to the City – and to you.

This isn’t about taking options away – it’s about keeping what’s working and protecting the progress Portage has already made.

Accountability today and tomorrow

Others have questioned whether the savings and service improvements that Portage residents are seeing with the current single-hauler contract will last. The answer is simple: The City sets the terms, monitors performance and enforces the current single-hauler contract to ensure residents continue to receive the value and reliability they expect.

  • Fact: It’s about cost and chaos.
    More haulers = more trucks, more confusion and more unpredictable pricing.

  • Fact: There are no guaranteed savings.
    Rates can rise, fees can be added and pricing becomes less predictable over time.
